Sylvia Plath
I first read Plath at university and later taught her to A-level students at a brutally North London private boys school, to the amused condescension of the all-male English staff. The boys, by contrast, were overwhelmed by the way her poetry spoke to them with such a depth of humanity. She taught me about women, about poetry, the power of the simplest line, giving a voice to the everyday struggles that are yours, mine, everyone’s, and key to our very survival.
