Martha Humphries (née Hardy)
To grandmother,a brave, intelligent woman. Leaving school to go into domestic service you exemplified a victorian work ethic plus fought off employers sons to keep your " virtue" intact. Wooed by a visiting tradesman you went on to bear 10 children, losing a boy and girl in their infancy. Nearly starving in 30s depression, the family thrived at last and your husband was elected a Labour Councillor.
Gladys, my mum was expecting me when you died. Your strength and determination live on in me.
