To the freedom of all women and girls
NADIA BOULANGER (1887-1979) was a most extraordinary music teacher to whom many famous composers flocked to be taught by her in Paris. Among her students were many important composers, including the Polish female composer, Graźyna Bacewicz, Aaron Copland, Philip Glass and Astor Piazzola. She was the first woman to conduct many major orchestras in America and Europe. Her younger sister, LILI BOULANGER (1893-1918) was a highly gifted composer and the first woman to win the Grand Prix de Rome.
