Born in 1890, Ysabel Birkbeck served in WWI as a front line ambulance driver. She served first with the Scottish Women's Hospital on the Romanian Front, returned to the UK via the Russian Revolution, and then went to the Belgian front. She was awarded two medals for bravery in WWI. In WWII, she drove an ambulance in the Blitz. In her old age, which was when our family knew her, she spent the summer months living alone in a remote cottage in the west highlands, going everywhere by boat.
